For Men:

  1. Call the Salvation Army.
  2. Call Drexel House.
  3. Call 2-1-1 for a referral to the St Mikes/Sacred Heart overflow shelter

For Women:
  1. Call the Salvation Army.
  2. Call Family Support Center to inquire about beds at Bread & Roses.
  3. Call Family Support Center to inquire about beds at the Emergency Overflow Shelter.

For Families:

  1. The Family Support Center provides referrals for all Thurston County family shelter beds.

General Shelter

Check in time: For Men: 7 pm, first come first serve.
For Women: Call ahead between 4:15 and 4:30
Salvation Army is the largest and best known shelter in town. It has the advantage of being downtown, and having meals prepared there. Guests must leave first thing in the morning. Salvation Army requires that guests show their ID. There are 42 beds for single men and 14 beds for single women. If guests wish to stay at SA for more than one night, they must participate in a program consisting of regular job search, counseling and financial savings (i.e. SA will hold onto 80% of a guest's income until they enter more permanent housing or leave the shelter for other reasons). If they leave for one night, they are not allowed to return for 60 days unless they have permission from their counselor to leave that particular night.

Drexel House

Sixteen beds for men, up to 90 day stay. Residents receive case management and supportive services throughout the entirety of their stay. They cannot offer bed space to men who are registered sex offenders of any level. To inquire about openings, call number above between 8am and 9am, Monday through Friday. Ask to speak to Bary.

Bread and Roses

This shelter offers 12 beds for single women only. The beds are long term (for up to 3 months, extensions based on situation) and there is usually a long wait for a bed to open up. Guests work with a Family Support Center case manager to arrange more permanent housing. Located on the East side near downtown Olympia.

Emergency Overflow Shelter
Come into the Family Support Center between 2:30 PM and 5:00 PM on weekdays to be screened for the Emergency Overflow Shelter. The Family Support Center is located at 108 State Ave, on the corner of State & Capitol in downtown Olympia (call 628-7343 for directions). If you have an emergency need for shelter, you may call after-hours to be screened for one night: 360-628-7343

For Families


Family Shelter
The Family Support Shelter accepts families with children. Come into the Family Support Center between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM on weekdays to be screened for the Family Shelter. The Family Support Center is located at 108 State Ave, on the corner of State & Capitol in downtown Olympia (call 628-7343 for directions). Out of the Woods

This house is available for families with children through the Unitarian Church. It is handicapped accessible. Located in West Olympia on public transportation route.

Emergency shelter for families with children. 4 apartments for emergency shelter, 30-90 day stays.

Yelm Community Services

Emergency shelter-1 apartment for anyone who is from Rainier or Yelm area, (No proof needed). 3 day stay or longer, depending on situation. Fill out application at Yelm Community Services. Not very busy according to receptionist there.

Winter Overflow Shelter

The following system is effective from November through March only.

For Men

Monday - Thursday: Call 1-800-572-4357 between 3:00PM and 4:00PM to screen for the St. Michael's shelter
Friday - Saturday: Call 1-866-946-1173 beginning at 7:00PM to screen for Sacred Heart
During sub-freezing weather: When the temperature drops below 32 degrees, cold weather procedures go into effect at the Salvation Army. If you are unable to get into any other shelter, and the temperature is below 32 degrees, go to the Salvation Army.
